When to run your first ads

Twenty dollars on day one for a completely different reason than a real budget at five thousand a month.

Spend twenty dollars on three platforms before you have built anything, and do not spend a real budget until five thousand a month. The early twenty dollars is not advertising, it is a demand test: it tells you whether anyone clicks and which audience is warmest, for the price of lunch. A real budget only works once you have creative that has already proven itself organically, because paid ads multiply whatever your message does and multiplying zero costs money.

What are the twenty dollar tests for?

Finding out whether anyone clicks, and which audience is warmest, before you build. Twenty dollars each on three of Google, Reddit, LinkedIn, Instagram and TikTok, pointed at a landing page with a real price on it.

Set the ad accounts up the day you have the idea, because approval takes a day or two and it is the one part of this that you cannot compress later. What you are buying is not traffic, it is a signal about which platform your buyer is actually on, which is otherwise a guess you will carry for a year.

When should I spend a real budget?

At five thousand a month, and only behind creative that has already worked without paying for reach. Paid social multiplies your message, so the question is never whether you can afford ads, it is whether you have something worth multiplying.

The sequence that works: a format works organically, or ten creator videos produce two that perform, and then you put budget behind those two and make variations weekly. At that point the constraint is how much creative you can produce, not budget, which is the opposite of what most people expect and the reason ad accounts stall at this stage.

Not yet

  • A real budget below five thousand a month. Ads there buy data you can get free by talking to people.
  • Spending behind creative that has not worked organically. You would be paying to find out something a free post would have told you.
  • Scaling a campaign in its first week. Weekly variation beats daily budget changes.

What should I read before spending anything?

The ad libraries. Meta, TikTok, Google and LinkedIn all publish every ad currently running, free and with no login in most cases, and almost nobody looks.

The signal to look for is a start date months in the past. Nobody keeps paying for an ad that does not work, so a long-running ad is the closest thing to public performance data you will get. Read what your competitors have been running longest, and read the formats rather than copying the ad.

Good to know

When should I start running paid ads?

Twenty dollar tests before you build, a real budget at five thousand a month. The first is a demand test, the second needs creative that has already proven itself.

How much should my first ad budget be?

Sixty dollars total: twenty on each of three platforms. Enough to learn whether anyone clicks and where, not enough to learn what customer acquisition costs, which is not the question yet.

Which platform should I test first?

Three of them, not one, because the point is finding out which audience is warmest. Pick from Google, Reddit, LinkedIn, Instagram and TikTok based on where you think your buyer is, then let the clicks correct you.
