App ad formats that worked, with the ads

App ad and organic short-form formats, each taken from a post by a founder or growth operator who named the format and tied it to a major outcome. TikTok, Reels, Shorts.

18 formats are carrying most of the short-form advertising for indie consumer apps, and the three that come up most often are a talking head over an app demo, faceless UGC that leads with the use case, and a slideshow of stills. Every format below starts from a post by the founder or operator who ran it, names the app, and plays the actual ad inside the post. 41 apps, at most two per app.

3 apps

Talking head plus app demo

A person says one specific, checkable thing about their own life, then the app appears doing the thing that caused it.

Finch 15M downloads · valued around $80M

“I have ADHD and my room has been cleaned for 50 days”

Open on X

Daniel · @danclipping

Credits the whole thing to a mascot plus heavy UGC distribution, and points at this one video as the format that went viral.

Language fluency AI app 500K installs · $500K MRR claimed · 9.9M views on the sample

“why tf is English so hard 🥀” then seamless app demo

Open on X

Daniel · @danclipping

Complaint as hook, then the app as the fix. No feature tour. The frustration line does the targeting.

Long-distance sister app 79.5M installs claimed · $1.15M/mo claimed · 7.2M views on the sample

“I found a way to interact with my long distance sister” then demo

Open on X

Daniel · @danclipping

Relationship situation first, product second. The install claim is the poster’s. The format is the point: one human need, then the screen.

3 apps

Faceless UGC, use case as the hook

Nobody on camera. The hook is the situation the app is for, not the app. Caption names the use case; the screen does the rest.

Airbuds 7.2M views · 829K likes · 1.5M Android + 300K iOS downloads

“apps for loving long distance relationships”

Open on X

Daniel · @danclipping

The app shows what music someone you love is playing, as a widget. The ads never explain the product, they name the relationship it is for.

Emotional expressions app 10M downloads · 5.3M views on the sample

“we use this app when we are far away💔” · 100% app demo

Open on X

Daniel · @danclipping

Phone screen only. No creator, no face, no script beyond the caption. Friends and LDR apps are running this pattern hard right now.

zero · @twoclipping

“nobody downloads this because they want an expression app. they download it because being far from someone you love quietly eats at you.”

MUBR 1.8M downloads · same content across 20+ small accounts

“cute apps for long distance relationships” · seeded, not viral

Open on X

Daniel · @danclipping

Same faceless hook, but the real move is distribution: identical content on dozens of mid-size accounts instead of one big hit. No ad budget, under 50 App Store ratings when they scaled.

1 app

POV, aimed at one feeling

Not a demo and not a claim. A single emotional moment the viewer recognises, with the app as the cause of it.

Ringtone app 12.3M views · 400K likes · $130K MRR

“POV: you know that special person is calling you”

Open on X

Daniel · @danclipping

An app that turns songs into ringtones. He puts the result down to friendship hooks rather than the feature.

zero · @twoclipping

Same app: “they didn’t win by selling it to everyone with a phone. they aimed the whole thing at one specific feeling, someone you love calling you. narrowing your audience feels like shrinking. its usually the opposite.”

1 app

The app as the punchline

A story video that works on its own, where the app is the reason the joke lands. Never framed as an ad. At scale this becomes a creator farm, not one viral clip.

Rizz $400K–$1.5M+ MRR claimed · multi‑billion organic views claimed · no paid ads on the original story

Texting story / fake conversation + product as the payoff

Open on X

zero · @twoclipping

“you dont scroll past a punchline, you watch it land and then go get the thing that made it work. the best distribution doesnt look like distribution.”

John · @johnvirality

Later breakdown of the same machine: texting-story format across TT/IG/YT/Snap/FB, 260K+ videos from 1,000+ creators, paid per 1K views. Founder @roman_khaves has also posted that Rizz sits around $400K MRR with distribution as the only moat.

The yap, long hook into demo

A strong verbal hook in the first second, then a longer face-cam monologue that only later becomes a product demo. People avoid it because the hook has to be sharp.

Manifestation app 250K downloads · 1.3M views · 9K saves on the yap cut

“I’m going to make out with the girl that showed me this”

Open on X

Daniel · @danclipping

Two formats ran: reaction + demo, and the yap. The yap is the one he breaks down. The hook stops the scroll; the monologue earns the demo.

Stella 50K downloads · $200–300K MRR claimed · one creator to 2.8M followers

Daily TikTok from one account, no gimmick, pure cadence

Open on X

Daniel · @danclipping

Calls it the Influencer Method: one creator posts daily until the account is the growth engine. Also documented by @adriamatz rebuilding the product side.

3 apps

Reaction plus app demo

Someone reacts to the app doing something, in one take, on a phone. Cheapest reliable format there is. Works organic and as Spark/Meta ads. Founders keep naming it as the first format that printed.

Prayer Lock $150K month · bootstrapped Christian app · founder is the source

Real reaction, then a short screen demo

Open on X

Mau Baron · @maubaron

“my $150k month app started with my wife doing UGC reactions + app demo videos. this is still imo the best format to get started SPECIALLY if you have a low budget. they work great organically and as ads.” First $5K month and later 2.5M views in a week from the same creator.

Travel app $90K/mo claimed · 23.8M views · 1.8M shares on one cut

One emotional moment, nothing else

Open on X

joana · @sixugc

Emotion as the entire ad. Features never carry these numbers. A sister cut on the same niche ($87K/mo, 11.5M views) is the shocked “I can do WHAT in London” reaction.

joana · @sixugc

The London reaction cut: “not because of the product. because of one reaction.”

Open on X

Fitness app ($100K/mo) $100K/mo claimed · millions of organic views via this UGC shape

“4 years in the gym and I only just found this!?” → POV screen recording

Open on X

César Álvarez · @cesaralvarezll

Reverse-engineers growth for a living (100K+ on @acadeller). Format is two beats only: surprised reaction + text hook, then POV demo. “Simple format. Massive reach.”

2 apps

AI face hook plus screen recording

A generated face does the scroll-stop reaction. The rest is a real POV screen recording anyone can film. No creator on payroll. The scale claim is what makes it matter.

Wedding app 11.8M views · 1M likes · 202K bookmarks · 2.5K-follower account · $0 ad spend

AI crying-bride face reaction, then POV screen recordings

Open on X

Sam · @sammgrowth

“not one comment noticed the crying bride doesnt exist. the face reaction hook is 100% ai. the rest is pov screen recordings anyone can film.” 20M+ organic views across the page. 202K bookmarks is the conversion signal.

2 apps

Crying / shock scroll-stop face

The first frame is an extreme face: crying, WTH, shock. The product only appears after the thumb stops. At the apps that matter, this is mass-distributed, not one lucky clip.

Cheater-finder app 35M–37M views on sample cuts

High-drama relationship reveal as UGC

Comment bait, app name nowhere in the video

Video targets a feeling or insecurity and never says the product. People comment to find it. You pin the reply. Comment views become the distribution. Distinct from “show the app on screen.”

Women’s insecurity app (unnamed) $800K MRR claimed · ~200K downloads · indirect TikTok at scale

Target the insecurity → force a comment → pin the app name

Open on X

Bella · @growthsuck

“target women insecurities. do not mention app name. force the user to comment. pin the comment, everyone sees it.” Breaks down the same campaign as @cashflxws: indirect videos, reply-as-conversion, sometimes search ads catching the App Store spillover.

woosh · @cashflxws

Same app, same machine: “indirect videos on tiktok at scale (about insecurities or feelings) makes people comment… more people view comments than you think.”

Open on X

Cal AI copycat (no name in content) 15M views on one AI slideshow account · comments ask for the app

Slideshow never names the app · no pin · conversion left on the table

Open on X

Roman Khaves · @roman_khaves

Embeds the viral cut. “tons of comments asking for the app name, so it’s converting… but they never name the app in the content, and there’s no pinned comment.” Same comment-bait mechanic as the $800K play, slideshow version.

2 apps

Niche content with an app overlay

Not an ad. Normal niche TikTok (theme-page stock, trending audio, text). The app is a small overlay or picture-in-picture so the video still works as content. Viewers leave to search the app. Content-rewards economics, not Meta CPMs.

Consumer app (content-rewards case) 300K MRR in 2 months claimed · 481M views · $0.12–$0.30 eCPM vs $15–25 Meta

Theme-page video/slideshow + app on screen the whole time

Open on X

Alex · @alexxgrowth

CMO @contentrewards, WSJ-featured, 7-figure agency exit. Founder waking up to 10–30M views/day. “people gotta see your app in the video/slideshow… normal tiktok content that people watch… the app naturally fit into the niche.” Best marketing “doesnt feel like marketing at all.”

WayShot → Preca (DigiCam format) WayShot $100K MRR / 150M views · Preca $200K MRR / 31M views as the faster clone

DigiCam-style content format, then a better funnel on the copy

Open on X

Alex · @alexxgrowth

Named both apps. Original cracked the DigiCam content format brick by brick; clone shortened the funnel, charged more, and beat revenue on a fraction of the views. Point is the format + funnel stack, not inventing from zero.

The short viral moment (product aha)

A product capability so compact you can show the whole aha in about three seconds of demo — not “must open the ad.” Photo → calories. Share a TikTok → trip plan. Pinterest → pose. Simone’s test: it triggers “I want this right now,” and comments ask “what’s the app.” Build the moment into the product first; formats just frame it.

Cal AI 6M+ downloads · ~$30M ARR claimed · photo of food → calories/macros

Take a pic & get calories — the whole product in one beat

Open on X

Lino · @LinoLeighton

Walks through a converting TikTok slideshow using Cal AI as the worked example (hook still → value slides → subtle CTA + App Store icon). The viral moment is the product: one photo of a meal is the entire promise. Same one-action heart Simone names.

Simone Canc · @simonecanciello

“every $100k/month+ app has a strong 3 seconds viral moment you can easily see in their ads. cal ai - take a pic & get calories · roamy - share tiktok & get travel plans · clicked - get pose ideas from pinterest… if they leave a comment with “what’s the app” you did a good job.” About the product aha, not the ad’s opening frame.

Piano-from-TikTok app 277K views on the sample · share a song TikTok → learn it on piano

See a song on FYP → app turns it into a piano lesson

Open on X

Simone Canc · @simonecanciello

Same family as Roamy: share-from-TikTok is the product aha and what the ad demoes. “an app where you learn piano songs by sharing tiktok you come across.”

3 apps

Pure phone screen, product is the content

No face. No story. Just the phone using a feature that is already entertaining. Only works when the product itself is the scroll-stopper (locks, push-ups, live games, widgets). Related to the short product aha, but can be longer spectacle rather than one compact transformation.

Push-up unlock / screen-time twist 1M+ views on the sample · product designed for Reels/TikTok

Dual visual hooks + reply to other virality

Hijack attention that already exists: reply to a comment under a different viral video, stack two visual hooks in one cut, name the app that made the thing. Playkit’s team runs this for big consumer apps.

3 apps

Long-text story on a face or loop

A face (or shocked loop) with a long on-screen story the viewer has to read. Reading time forces watch time. Product name-drops mid-story or after the identity hook lands. Playkit’s high-converting Parrot campaign was almost entirely this shape.

Starting a new account

Every new app needs new accounts, and a brand new account is not treated like an established one. This is what people running these campaigns say happens in the first 72 hours.

TikTok runs new accounts through a trust score, and most people fail it without knowing it exists.

The triggers he lists: posting within 24 hours of creating the account, putting a link in the bio on day one, following and unfollowing in rapid bursts, only engaging with one narrow category, posting again before the first post got any engagement, and using images that match their duplicate database. The big one, in his words, is making your first post a promo for your own app.

One week at zero views that warm up does not fix, start again. Zero to 300 views across twenty consecutive posts, start again. A steady 300 to 700, the account is fine and it is the hook that needs rotating. A month with nothing breaking one or two thousand, start again. His framing: “i think i’m shadowbanned” — no you’re not, you have a hook problem.

What the platforms actually allow

Running several accounts is allowed, and there is an official tool for it

TikTok Business Center is the supported way to hold multiple TikTok accounts, multiple ad accounts, pixels, catalogues and team members under one organisation, with per asset permissions and admin, standard and finance roles. If you are testing creative across accounts for real, this is the path that does not fight the platform.

TikTok Business Center help

Both apps support account switching on one device

TikTok and Instagram both let you hold several accounts on a phone and switch between them in app. The specific caps get repeated everywhere as five logged in and eight registered on TikTok, but I could not find that number in TikTok’s own documentation, only in user posts, so treat it as folklore until you hit the limit yourself.

TikTok support

A new account to get around a ban is the one thing that does not work

Permanent bans are enforced against the device and the identity, not just the username, so the replacement usually dies too, and creating it breaks the terms either way. The supported route is the in app appeal. Everything on this page assumes accounts that are allowed to exist.

Good to know

What is the best short-form ad format for an app?

A talking head over an app demo, if you only try one. Someone says one specific, checkable thing about their own life, then the app appears doing the thing that caused it. It comes up more than any other format in the posts on this page, and it needs no actors, no budget and no editing skill. Faceless UGC led by the use case is the next one to try, because you can make it without being on camera.

How many videos do I need before one works?

Assume hundreds. The Playkit state of tech UGC report counted 69,000 videos across consumer apps and found roughly 0.3 percent of them drove half of all the views. Volume is the mechanism rather than a sign you got something wrong, so pick a format you can repeat every week over a video you can perfect.

Should I use AI avatars or real creators?

Use AI to find the angle and real people to scale it. AI video costs a few dollars a clip, which makes it the cheap way to learn which hook lands. Once a hook works, a real person filming it usually converts better. The AI face hook plus screen recording format below is what the middle ground looks like in practice.

When should an app start running UGC ads?

At five thousand a month, once you already have a message that converts. Handing your message to creators before you know what it is buys a wider audience for a pitch that does not land yet. Below that, make the content yourself using these formats, which costs nothing but your time. When you do start, messaging small creators directly is the cheap route: fifteen to twenty five dollars a video plus about two dollars per thousand views, capped.

How long should the video be, and how fast does the hook have to land?

Under three seconds for the hook, and roughly twenty to thirty seconds for a creator-led clip. Every format here opens with the reason to keep watching rather than with the product. The app arrives second, and in a few of these formats it is never named at all.

Are the view counts and revenue figures on this page verified?

No. Every view count, download number and revenue figure is the poster’s own claim, repeated because the claim is part of why that operator picked that ad. Treat them as a reason to test a format, not as a forecast.

Every post above was read on 30 July 2026. View counts, downloads and revenue are the poster’s own claims, repeated here because the claim is part of why they picked the ad, not because anyone audited it. Posts embed through X, so if one is deleted its card goes with it. Consumer apps and indie webapps only.

Which stage to run these at is on the climb. The tools for making and clipping the videos are on the route index, and the free ones are here.
